Home PageBirds of Devon and Cornwall Curlews

Latin name - Numenius arquata

Both sexes are the same with long legs, brown upper-parts, white rump and its distinctive long down-curved bill. The largest wader in the United Kingdom, it breeds on damp moorland and pasture from April to July, but for the rest of the year it can be found around the whole of the coast on mudflats and estuaries. It is famous for its evocative call, once heard, never forgotten.
