The reddest of all the red darters, the males are deep red including their faces with, unlike Common Darters, entirely black legs. The females are a dull yellow brown but share the entirely black legs of the male. They can easily be confused with the Common Darter so we hope we have got our identification right! The Ruddy Darter is not a very big dragonfly reaching a length of some 34 to 46mm with a wingspan less than 60mm.
